About the Department:

       The Department of Geology of North Bank College, established in the year 2016, is one of the newest departments in the whole of North East India to start Degree Courses in Geology.The Geology Department of North Bank College, Lakhimpur District, is the only department in the Northern bank of Brahmaputra of Assam offering undergraduate core and generic courses in Geology. In fact, it is one out of five such departments affiliated to Dibrugarh University at present. It admits about 20 students annually in its B.Sc. program.

        The Department of Geology of North Bank College seeks to provide the students with a strong theoretical and practical foundation to enable them to pursue higher studies and which ultimately helps students in securing careers in the diverse field of Earth sciences with employment opportunities in geological survey institutes, oil and gas industries, engineering projects, mining sector, scientific research and academic career in Earth Sciences.

Mission:

Ø To provide high-quality education in geology at the graduate level and to promote academic excellence among students.

Ø  To offer different seminar programs and provide necessary facilities and supervision for aspiring students in diverse branches of geology such as igneous and metamorphic petrology, structural geology, sedimentology, coal geology, hydrogeology, petroleum geology, economic geology, etc.

Ø  Providing field activities in different geological fields, with a focus on both basic and applied education that addresses important societal and environmental issues.

Ø To provide students with access to modern laboratory equipment, specimen collections, and lab facilities, and offer opportunities for field studies to gather knowledge about the local areas.

Ø To create a geological database of North East India, which is yet to be explored at large, and contribute to the advancement of geological knowledge in the region.

Facilities:

       The departmental infrastructure and resources include departmental library, smart class-room, laboratories with a large stockpile of samples of rocks, minerals, fossils, petrological microscopes, ore microscopes, and other equipment like brunton and clinometer compass, portable-GPS, pocket stereoscopes, hammers, surveying equipment, geological time scale, world’s map etc.
