Department of Political Science

About the Department:

                Political Science Department is an important department of North Bank College, Ghilamara. This is three-year (six semesters) Degree Course affiliated to Dibrugarh University. The department was inducted since the very beginning of the college in July, 1961. Initially, the department was started without major course and with the teachers- Sri Praffulla Saikia, Sri K. P. Saikia and Late Prasana Kumar Buragohain.  . Major course was introduced in 1984 in the department.

         From the very inception, department has been performing a good academic results which certainly have contributed a remarkable share in the field of higher education, not simply confined to this locality but covered a big portion of undivided Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts. Most of the successful candidates of the department have pursued higher studies and have been serving in different higher educational institutions and various state government departments. The department has an annual intake capacity of 380 students at undergraduate level.

          Study of the subject of Political Science opens up multiple opportunities for Political Science graduates. Our students can acquire a diverse set of skills that can be applied to a wide range of post-graduation opportunities such as civil services, journalism, law, graduate school, careers in teaching and research, print and electronic media, business, entrepreneurship and national services.

       The Political Science department has opened Human Rights Education Centre, sponsored by UGC. It introduced certificate course of 6 months on Human Rights. The course was inaugurated on 7th Sept. 2016. Under the banner of Human Rights Education Centre.

                In many ways the faculty inspires the students of the department to be active in different fields along with the academic field. The Department has an association named “North Bank College Political Science Association” for facilitating the students of the department to develop their ability through discussion & deliberation within themselves.                   

 Mission :

  • To promote higher education among the students from the college, most of them constitute a underprivileged group.
  • To develop the research potential of the students in a learner-friendly environment.
  • To provide value-added courses to complement the routine syllabus in order to achieve overall excellence.
  • We aim to develop a body of scholars equipped with in department knowledge of the discipline and sensitivity to the aspirations of Indian society for bringing about social transformation, public service and gender justice.
  • To equip the students to understand and analyze political and administrative processes at local, regional, national and international level.
  • To orient students towards value - based democratic politics with a new to create empowered citizens and to prepare them to perform their role as active and responsible citizens.
  • To produce best human resource for the advancement of society, State and the nation 

Vision:

Ø The department of Political Science endeavors to impart knowledge in all aspects of the subject as per UGC course curriculum.

Ø To impart quality education so as to develop scientific temper and spirit of critical inquiry.

Ø To undertake teaching, research and extension programs in major branches of Political Science.

Ø .To impart training to the student in order to equip them academic and professional capability

Ø To encourage research in the social political issues at contribute to the discipline of Political Science.

Facilities:       

The department has been involved in conducting various activities for both teachers and students. Apart from organizing Seminars and Discussions, Political Science department provides facilities as mentioned below:

1) The department has a well-equipped department library with a reasonable collection of books, magazines and journals for the students and faculties. The department has 221nos of recorded books. The library is regularly updated.

2) The department has introduced Human Rights Education Centre in the year of 2016 and has 189 nos of recorded books in context of Human Rights Course.

3) The department has a projector. The use of multimedia teaching aids like LCD projectors, internet enables laptop and desktop computer is used. Besides the general lecture method followed by tutorial classes, home assignments and group discussions, Digital & Smart Classes are also part of the department’s routine activities.

4) Furthermore, the students are given special training on how to present PPT enabled seminar papers on a smart panel.

5) The department conducts home visits to students’ home to create friendly ambience.

6) The department has been publishing two magazines- First, the departmental magazine “Polity” and second, the Wall-magazine “Jagrity”.

7) Moreover, the department has a display board for the students.

8) The teachers of the dept. take online classes and tests on the platform of Google Meet and Google Classroom.

9) Email and WhatsApp are used for providing study materials to students.

10) Department of Political science has signed a MoU with the Department of Political science, Harhi college Dhakuakhana.

11)  The Department has published a booklet named “Pride and Achievement, part – A (from 1985- 2022)”- for record of students passed from the Dept. of Political Science.

12)  The Department has published a News Letter to provide readers about news, events, activities or other information of the department.

The department of Political Science intends to develop itself into a centre of excellence and excellent human resource development and for that it has prepared a perspective plan which includes the following:

1. To provide quality education to the students.

2. To organize national seminar on core issues in Indian Democracy.

3. To organize students visit to Vidhan sabha of Assam state.

4. To promote research culture among the students.

5. To organize workshop.

6. To increase social awareness programmes in the backward areas for removal of social drawback.

7. To counseling the students for higher studies and job.
